Martin is passionate about the discovery of new horizons beyond recreational diving and the opportunity to capture these unique environments. A certified cave diver, rebreather diver and advanced trimix diver, Martin is inspired by the skill needed to photograph caves, mines, deep wrecks and other exciting places.
It was during my childhood when I fell in love with the ocean. My parents often reminisce of funny stories of me as a young boy while snorkeling for hours in Croatia.
As a teenager I discovered a real passion for observing marine life. A few years later, in the Mediterranean, I got certified as OWD. Until I captured my first UW photographs, I had logged several hundreds of dives and enjoyed adrenaline deep diving, hence photography related to entertainment at decompression stops. As my enthusiasm for underwater photography increased, I transformed myself from an adrenaline deep diver into a passionate photographer. Suddenly a new underwater world opened up to me. Capturing these amazing moments and adventures I had already experienced as a diver suddenly became my challenge. A decade ago I became a fully professional underwater photographer and journalist for the German magazine UNTERWASSER. It is my will to capture and present underwater experience of all kinds that provides me with endless portion of motivation.
Discovery of horizons beyond recreational diving and the opportunity to capture these unique environments inspired me so strongly that I got certified as cave diver, rebreather diver and advanced trimix diver. Technical diving in many aspects represents another dimension, so does the underwater photography in caves, mines, deep wrecks and other exciting places. As there is barely room for mistakes as far as diving itself is concerned, photography becomes secondary important to care of. But if a diver reaches certain level of skills, he starts enjoying the corners very few eyes have seen and often no experienced photographer has captured. It is the definition of space what I try to describe in tech diving images. The feelings that come from inside of divers themselves when swimming through endless dark tunnels, deep structures and holes are nowhere else to find.
Besides traditional cave diving in places like Mexico, Florida, Bahamas, I have discovered exciting limestone caves in Greece, Croatia and Hungary, but among my favorite spots for technical diving belong old mines in Slovakia, Poland and Germany. These reveal a portion of history in addition to hardcore tech diving. Especially Slovak Opal mine examines the diver’s skills precisely, but to those, who succeed is grateful as much as a cave can be.
Thanks to my job I extensively travel and discover many corners of the world. Although I have completed several thousands of dives at all kind of conditions, water still provides me unceasing motivation and strong emotions.
I have been lucky to win some global underwater competitions:
